The 2 modules can be delivered as 2 separate half days:

  • Module 1 MANUAL HANDLING AND PERSON MOVING
  • Module 2 SAFE USE OF WHEEL CHAIRS

AIMS: The course is designed specifically for Care Staff and introduces them to the 'Power Position' and S.L.A.M principle. It combines both theoretical and practical advice and instruction for safe manual handling and the movement of service users. The course duration is approximately 4 hours and courses are designed to meet the Care Standards Section 23 requirements.

The programme includes:

HEALTH AND SAFETY LEGISLATION

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases & Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
  • The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
  • The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
  • The Care Standards Act 2000

ASSESSMENTS

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

The Spinal Column / Muscle association / Ergonomics / Biomechanics

PERSON MOVING EQUIPMENT

Types and use of equipment

PRACTICAL SESSION

The 'Power Position' / Standing and walking of persons / Seat to seat transfers / Movement in beds / Controlled falling / Movement out of bed / Use of handling aids / Problem solving.

SAFE USE OF WHEEL CHAIRS

Supplementing the Manual Handling and Person Moving course or as a ‘stand alone’ course, the Safe Use of Wheel Chairs deals with the issues surrounding the needs of the wheel chair user and the safe use of a wheel chair.

Caring for a person in a wheel chair

An awareness of the needs of the wheel chair user

PRACTICAL SESSION (Stand alone course only)
